Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital has joined hundreds of healthcare organizations across North Carolina to create a tobacco-free
campus. Both inside and outside all HCMH buildings, employees and visitors can now enjoy fresh air and less tobacco-related litter. Hugh Chatham is dedicated to the health and well-being of everyone who comes to us. Thank you for supporting this important goal.

Q: I’m under a lot of stress, and need to smoke. Why are you stopping me?
A: We understand your stress. We made this policy:
• Because of the dangers of secondhand smoke to others.
• Because allowing tobacco use on campus makes it harder for others to quit.
Q: Why can’t I smoke in the parking lot, or away from other people?
A • Secondhand smoke is unhealthy.
• It sets a bad example for youth.
Q: Is this policy only for smoking materials?
A: In the interest of health, the restrictions also include snuff and chewing tobacco.
Q: Why is the hospital doing this?
A:
• A tobacco-free environment promotes better health.
• It encourages those who want to quit using tobacco.
• We all need to set a healthy example for young visitors.
Q: Do other hospitals ban tobacco from their campuses?
A: Nearly all hospitals in North Carolina already have similar policies in place. |
